Lead and You
Even low levels of lead in our bodies is not good for us. The toy recalls have many parents concerned about contamination in themselves and their children. Children's Hospital of LA has seen a 25% increase in lead testing since the recall of Chinese toys. According to the CDC, any lead level above 9 micrograms per deciliter is unsafe, but new studies suggest that levels as low as 2.5 micrograms can cause lowering of math and reading skills. In truth, there is no safe level especially to the developing brain of the child. Lead exposure can lead lowered IQ, ADD, ADHD, behavioral problems and even mental retardation. Here is a list of some common signs:

Children and Environmental Toxins
Our children, like ourselves, are susceptible to environmental toxins. Perhaps even more so. Their bodies are smaller and they may accumulate relatively higher levels than us. It is also true that many of them have acquired toxic exposures from their mothers during gestation. Ironically, the mother's body may dump her accumulated toxins into her baby resulting in a significant load for the baby by the time they are born. This infant acquired toxin load may be one of the reasons why we are seeing an exponential rise in ADD/ADHD, childhood obesity, diabetes, depression, suicide, autism and childhood cancer. These toxins include pesticides, dioxins, PCBs, arsenic, mercury, maternal drugs, etc. They can injure the newly developing cells in the brain and other organs. This can contribute to learning and behavior difficulties, blood sugar problems, appetite disturbances and others.

Sluggish bowels slowing you down?
Normally, the body should have a bowel movement at least once every 24 hours and for many, twice in that period is optimal. If a stool is not passed within 24 hours the contents may begin to be absorbed back into the body and have to be dealt with again. Nearly all people with central nervous system problems, like M.S., Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's, have a history of constipation. So if you are not going daily, its time to find out why.

Heavy-Metal Detoxification Therapy
Pollutants invade the body's tissue just as they invade the bloodstream. In particular, heavy metals can contribute to degenerative diseases. They can also cause symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, memory loss, insomnia, unexplained tremors, depression, and chronic headaches, among other problems. Ridding the body of these toxic substances may improve a person's ability to live longer, relieve life-debilitating symptoms, and may even improve a person's resistance to the effects of some diseases. At LifeWorks Wellness Center, we use Metal-Free as one component of our detoxification program.

Designing for Low Electromagnetic Radiation in the Home
by Mary Cordaro
Our homes are places for rest, retreat and regeneration. If designed, built and furnished simply, thoughtfully and intelligently, they can help us restore our natural balance and connection with nature. For most of us, however, creating a healthy home environment is often unfamiliar and sometimes overwhelming territory. And many of our conventional methods of design and building can add stress, rather than harmony. One potential area for stress in the home is "EMF" -- electromagnetic fields --from power lines, inside wiring, appliances and other electrical equipment in the home.
Health Effects
"Electro-pollution" has recently become a hot topic in both the television and print media. Stories about schools and homes that have been tested for low- frequency electromagnetic radiation have appeared in Time Magazine, The New Yorker and the Wall Street Journal, as well as on "CBS Street Stories" and "Good Morning America." A large-scale
