Do diet foods make you fatter?

In looking at the population expansion (in weight that is) over the past few decades it would seem that eating more “diet” foods do make people fatter. If one looks at the scene, as more diet products have come to the market, people have gotten fatter and fatter. Is there a correlation that might explain this?
