Greetings,
Whoa, summer starts tomorrow. I was speaking with a good friend this week. He told me his doc had put him on a blood pressure medicine a while back and though he didn't like taking it, he thought it was best to do so. Then at this last check up the blood pressure was still up so the doc was going to add a "water pill."

At this point I'm thinking to myself, "Oh no! Danger zone. Two scripts when there could be none." Blood pressure meds block Calcium and magnesium movement in and out of cells and water pills deplete the body of potassium and magnesium. These are the two most important minerals in regulating blood pressure. He has high blood pressure and most likely is low in body magnesium and now the water pill is going to cause him to lose more. The cure that was supposed to help was going to harm.

Then he said, "I read your recent article from the last issue of Optimum Health Report entitled "Go Natural, Not Pharmaceutical. It made a lot of sense to me and I would like to know what I should do so my blood pressure can be normal without these pills."

High blood pressure is the body trying to cope with something. Often weight is a very big factor in this. I told him that one of the best indicators of health is your waistline. I measure mine weekly right at the belly button. Remember what yours was when you graduated high school? What is it now? The story is in the tape. Get it back to high school size!

We talked some more and I asked him what his weight was when he graduated high school. He said 155 pounds. What is it now? "Ooooh, 200 pounds. Its up 45 pounds in the last 35 years," he said. It's the slow creep.

I am nearly positive that with half of those pounds gone through proper food and supplements he would not need his blood pressure meds anymore. One of the most common needs of people with high blood pressure is more magnesium. Nearly 80% of the population is deficient in this essential mineral.

My first suggestions for him was to see a local alternative health care doc who can check him over and get him the correct diet and supplements to shrink that waist down to a nice trim 32-34 inches and a BP of 110/70!

Recall what was said by one of America's first true health advocates, Jack LaLane, "Your waist line is your life line." Jack LaLane is still going at 90 and still has his 28" waist. It's a simple indicator but a very good one. Go check yours! And if its too high, you can "Go Natural, Not Pharmaceutical" and get back to where you belong.

Have a great week.

Mercury and autism? Is there a link?
There is an epidemic of autism in the U.S. Nearly 1/150 infants (boys much more frequent than girls, the link below will explain why) are being diagnosed with this terrible disorder. Most of these children have very high levels of mercury in their bodies, either from maternal transfer while in utero or from childhood vaccines that contained ethyl mercury (thimerosol) as a preservative.

The Downside of Bran Muffins
The couple was 85 years old, and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies.

Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife's insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade.

Nutrition winning over post partum problems
A close friend of mine, who is a physician, recently had her first baby. She is a world renowned nutritional expert and she practices what she preaches regarding her own nutrition.

Her labor was difficult and after 3 days she had to have a C Section. A magnificent healthy daughter was born, but post partum she was exhausted. She was unable to sleep and was having a very difficult time of it.

Do You Weigh More Than You'd Like?
Most people do. In the US 127 million people are overweight. 60 million are obese. 9 million are severely obese. It's actually a worldwide problem. The next time you go out, doesn't matter where, an airport, the grocery store, or the movies and look around. Take a tally of the first 25 people you see and categorize them: Normal, overweight, obese, severely obese. Most of what you see will not be normal. This was not true 30 years ago. There are lots of reasons given: genes, stress, fast food, no exercise

Does exercise help the brain too?
Exercise of course has a many benefits, more muscle, less fat, better metabolic rate, lowers heart attack risk, more energy etc. What about brain power?

In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences scientists put subjects through a three month aerobic workout program. Guess what happened? It "coaxed the human brain into growing new nerve cells... to form dense, interconnected webs that make the brain run faster and more efficiently." According to the article, "those who gained the most in cardiovascular fitness also grew the most nerve cells."
