Greetings,
This week: Could your prescription meds be making you fat? Can flame retardants be causing us to be ill? Tax wisdom? Does your sweat smell like ammonia? Are long lasting light bulbs that bad?

Could your prescription meds be making you fat?
Fat accumulation is monitored by many things. Hormones, calorie intake, overall activity level, and metabolic rate. Metabolic rate is the body's overall "burn rate" of calories. People with high metabolism can take in more calories and not gain weight because they're resting burn rate is higher. The metabolic rate is controlled by several hormones including adrenalin, thyroid hormone, and growth hormone. Another hormone leptin controls the hunger switch.

Do you smell like ammonia when you sweat?
Proteins are the only food group that contain nitrogen. Fats and carbohydrates do not. Each protein is made up of chains of simpler compounds called amino acids. There are 22 amino acids commonly found in the human body structure. Amino acids contain, along with nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and sometimes sulfur.
Interestingly, when we eat protein, most of the amino acids are broken down and used for energy and not for building body structure. In this case the nitrogen is cleaved off and the carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen portion gets burned as a fuel.
