Dear Readers, Greetings! When I was in high school, I was fascinated with
the ancient Vedic writings. These were written by Indian sages over 4000
years ago. One of the important concepts written about is the cycle of
life. Create-survive-destroy. When applied to a body, this becomes conception
(creation of the body with the union of the sperm and egg), then survival,
the time one has to live, and then death when the body is destroyed. Looking
more closely at the survival part of the cycle, one sees that this has two
aspects: how long will one live and how much pain or pleasure does one have
while he is living. Click

Our Kids Are At The Highest Risk
Our children are
very susceptible to environmental toxins. In fact many
of them have acquired continual toxic exposures in
utero from their mothers. This is because for many
toxins, the placenta will pull them out of the mother's
body and concentrate them in the fetus. By the
time the child is born they may already have a
significant load. Undoubtedly, these toxins have much
to do with the exponential rise in ADD/ADHD,
childhood obesity, diabetes , depression, suicide ,
autism and childhood cancer . - David I. Minkoff, MD read

Hippocrates' Cure For Influenza?
Hippocrates, the Greek "father of medicine," of Hippocratic oath fame, called
the elderberry tree his "medicine chest" because of its many uses for various
maladies.
Elderberries have been used as folk remedies for the common cold and influenza
for centuries. Some years ago, Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, an Israeli virologist,
discovered isolates in black elderberry that prevent viruses from infecting
healthy cells. From this research, Dr. Mumcuoglu developed an elderberry extract
called Sambucol. - David I. Minkoff, MD read

Soft Drinks Fund Education Or Illness?
While I don't always agree with the American Academy of Pediatrics, I applaud
their guts to stand up for children on this one. Usually in the battle of health
versus money, money wins. Maybe this time not.
Selling soda pop in school cafeterias is good business but bad health policy.
With total disregard for the health of their students, some school boards are
making deals with soft drink manufacturers to put vending machines in
cafeterias and the schools are reaping the profits to the tune of $200
million a year. As all of us know, sugar is an immune suppressant, in addition
to its other ills. Often, not only does one get 12-14 teaspoons of sugar or
chemical nutrisweet with each 12 ounces, but a good dose of caffeine too. -

Can Echinacea Prevent The Flu?
Here is another tidbit that is good to know with flu season all around us.
Echinacea is another folk remedy that is often given when someone is sick. According
to this JAMA article, it did not work once the person got the flu, but if you
are around someone who is sick, and you take the Echinacea before you have symptoms,
it will significantly protect you from getting it. So, when exposed take Echinacea,
when already sick, take Sambucol.
Make room in your medicine cabinet for both!
There are lot of other substances that help with immune support. For a
good list of them click

Knowledge Is Power
Knowledge is power if that knowledge is acted upon. Looking out for children
is the job of every parent and teacher. What does one have to know to do this
well? Here is a very useful list that was put together by a concerned parent.
This can be used to take an inventory of one's house and environment, habits
and food choices to make a better life. - David I. Minkoff, MD read
