What are Lutein and Zeaxanthin?
They are both carotinoids. Carotinoids are the natural phytochemicals that give the orange and yellow colors to fruits and vegetables and fall leaves. Both are important in maintaining general health but especially important in vision as there are high concentrations of both in the retina and macula (the part of the eye crucial for close vision). In fact their concentrations are 1000 times greater in the macula than any other part of the body.

Lutien and Zeaxanthin are the most effective known carotinoids to inhibit lipid peroxidation. This is what occurs when free radicals attack eye tissues and result in cataracts and macular degeneration. People eating diets low in these nutrients suffer from higher rates of macular degeneration and cataracts. The body cannot make them and so they must be included in the diet. By taking 6 mg a day of lutien per day the risk of macular degeneration is cut in half and people with cataracts have been proven to improve vision when taking lutein. When people ingest a lot of fast food, smoke, have chemical exposure, eat non organic foods, etc, the needs for lutien are greater. lutein has also been shown to protect against atherosclerosis.

Additives and Food Substitutes
This week I ran across some articles on food additives and food substitutes. It got me thinking about the word "food." I realized I didn't have a good definition of it. So I looked in Webster's: "food (fÁd), n. 1. any nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, promote growth, etc."

Can Spicy Food Help Insomniacs?
Researchers from the University of Tasmania report that eating spicy food can help you sleep and ratchet up your energy for the next day.

The study lasted eight weeks. For the first 4 weeks the 25 volunteers ate a bland diet. The second 4 weeks they ate two curries a day, about 30 grams of chili peppers per day. The participants in the study said that at first the spicy food bothered their sleep, but after they got used to it that they fell asleep and woke up more easily, requiring 20 minutes less sleep each night, and had more energy the next day.

The effects may be due to capsaicin, the chemical that is responsible for chili peppers' hot taste. Capsaicin may act on brain sensors to improve sleep cycles.
