The Hormone Profile - What's it all about? FBy Susan J. Gregoire MN, ARNP Sharon B, age 52, arrived at my LifeWorks Wellness Center office November 2006. She complained of 4 years of menopause fatigue, hot flashes, headaches, loss of libido, sadness and weight gain. She became "weepy" and her husband, Jim, shared that other efforts to improve Sharon's health issues had ended with disappointing and discouraging results. So, what is it all about? Gradually, during one's lifetime, symptoms of hormonal imbalance become more pronounced, and reflect the body's biochemical pathway dysfunctions, which in turn impact hormone levels. There may be many other products in our homes, as well as common house dust that have high lead levels that may lead to human illness. The CDC estimates at least 4.4% of children 1-5 years of age, have unsafe levels of lead in their blood. Other organizations report that children with excess lead are seven times more likely to drop out of school, and in their teen years to develop more violent, aggressive behavior. Is there a good program for people with chemical dependencies? I believe I know of one. People with substance abuse always suffer from nutritional deficiencies and toxicities in addition the substances that they abuse, no matter if that is alcohol or some illegal or prescription drug. Many facilities that deal with these people are ineffective in that as many as 75% revert to their habits soon after they finish their programs. I believe that one of the factors in this high rate of recidivism is that attention is not paid to the underlying deficiencies present which contributed to the problem in the first place.
