16,000 tons per year of sweetener
Can you believe that people consume 16,000 tons per year of Nutrisweet/Equal/aspartame/little blue sugar substitute packages? A ton is 2000 pounds X 16,000 = 32 million pounds! A recent recent article was published in the most recent issue of the European Journal of Oncology by the Ramazzini Foundation in Italy (which specializes in cancer and environmental influences) about this artificial sweetener.
For the last 30 years they gave over 1800 rats doses of aspartame similar to what humans would consume starting from 8 weeks of age for the rest of their lives. Their results showed that a “statistically significant” increase in leukemia and lymphomas occurred among female rats when drinking the equivalent in a human of 3 cans of diet soda per day. Research has already shown that aspartame may mimic or worsen such conditions as depression, fibromyalgia, Alzheimers, MS, Parkinson’s, arthritis and lupus.
The Department of Health and Human services put out a list of 61 adverse reactions to aspartame in 1994, that included everything from chest pains, migraine headaches, insomnia, weight gain, seizures, tremors and vertigo.
When aspartame is metabolized it releases methanol which further breaks down into formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a tissue and neurotoxin. The EPA safe limits for methanol are 7.8 mg per day.
One liter of diet coke will release almost eight times that much.
What to do? Avoid the little blue packages when you want something sweet. Better to use stevia, molasses, or honey or if you must, use regular sugar. It’s less toxic than aspartame.
