FDA Changes its tune on Stevia of course, look who's asking!
Not so long ago the US FDA did its best to wipe out stevia (a
very sweet
herb that is native to Paraguay) from the marketplace. They attacked suppliers, and all but banned the substance. Now the FDA has changed its tune and is allowing it to be sold in the US. Why? Well, the big guys came calling, in the form of Coke and Pepsi, and wanted to add it to their drinks.
This looks like a clear case of the FDA recognizing, Who's your daddy?
So it did the nod yes.
When stevia threatened the profits of aspartame, it got suppressed. The FDA touch guys seized imports at the border, destroyed millions in product, threatened fines for daring to sell it, and even had one company take it out of its recipe books.
Justice at work!
But fear no more. With the stroke of the pen (and a few little back room chats) its now all ok.
Anyway, for you cola addicts, you will now soon be able to get your Coke and Pepsi with stevia. I am not ready to convert, but this is better than aspartame or Splenda and is good overall. Moral of the story? To win the game of getting good policy regarding nutrition supported by government, increase the public demand for healthy products so much that big corps see the profit potential and jump in. Then things get done quicker.
Democracy at work again! dm
