Toxic shampoo and you?
The skin is the largest organ in our body. As an organ it breathes (remember Goldfinger?) and exchanges with the environment. When toxins are put on the skin they can be absorbed and enter the body. They can be deposited in important areas and cause malfunction and illness. It has been said that one should never put anything on the skin that he would not put in his mouth and eat, because both end up inside the body. Can you imagine applying that to your life?
Recently investigators at the National Institutes of Health found that an ingredient found in popular shampoos (Head and Shoulders, Suave, Clairol, and Pantene Hair conditioner), called MIT (methylisothiazoline), could cause brain cell damage in experimental rats. What effect would this have on a pregnant mother whose fetus was then exposed? Or could long term use lead to Alzheimer’s Disease or Parkinson’s Disease? I wouldn’t want to be part of the experiment to find out. What’s even more concerning is that the FDA hasn’t tested these products to evaluate what the toxic effects are in humans.
I find that people like the products they use because they smell good, or cause the luster they are looking for in their hair or skin. Often though, the natural products work as well and are safer. And I think you will find, that as you remove chemicals from your body and environment, that these products will no longer smell good or feel good. The body will actually perceive them as toxic and reject them. So consider and evaluate this for yourself. My rule of thumb is to look at the label, and if there are more names that I don’t recognize compared to the ones that I do, to pass on to something else. Vitamins and minerals and extracts of herbs or vegetables are very different than long chemical names that one has no clue what they are or what they are for.
Aubrey Organics makes some nice safe personal care products. Try them and give your body a nutritive aid to health, rather than another dose of toxic chemicals.
