Big Pharma Quickly Earning Big Tobacco Reputation
Pharmaceutical companies are under onslaught, even by insiders who have been their biggest promoters. Why? Ethics gone astray. In public surveys of opinion Big Pharma ranks just under Big Tobacco in reputation. Only 4.4 of 10 consumers think drug companies are serving them well. This is down from nearly 8 of 10 seven years ago. People also feel gauged by their pricing.
What are the other criticisms? That drug companies actively campaign to stop importation of less costly drugs, that they lobby against federal price controls, and that they spend more on promoting to doctors, (over $10,000 each per year) than in research and development and safety testing. And company cover- ups that revealed dangerous side effects with drugs in the testing phases that were dropped from publication which showed real dangers to people taking these medications.
Ethics is good conduct and doing what is right. Failure to do so harms everyone.
