Are you a Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet, or little Purple Pill User?
Long term use (2 years or more) of the most popular heartburn medications including the above can more than double your risk of developing dementia later in life, report researchers at Indiana University. These drugs block B12 absorption and mineral absorption, and impair protein digestion. They annually sell in the neighborhood of $20 billion per year!
Like all pharmaceuticals, these drugs may have emergency usefulness on a very limited or short time basis. Long term in my opinion, and those of the authors, they are very dangerous. The fact that they are now over the counter, makes them even more dangerous as anyone can use them without medical supervision for as long as they want.
The solution to heartburn is relatively simple and any alternative health practitioner can often solve it with non drug approaches.
Sometimes it is a bacterial infection in the stomach, or lack of stomach acid, or lack of pancreatic enzymes, or food intolerances.
None of these requires any pharmaceutical intervention.
