Take Probiotics and improve immunity study

Immune health is complex subject. It is dependent on several important things including adequate protein intake, essential fats and vitamins and minerals. Another factor is intestinal health. At least 70% of the immune producing cells lie in the wall of the small intestine. A recent study showed that supplementing of probiotics could boost the immune status of long distance runners. In the British Journal of Sports Medicine this month, a daily capsule of a probiotic containing L. rhamonasus was found to enhance T cell immunity in 20 elite endurance athletes during a four month period of training.

“Pyne and co-workers recruited the athletes and randomly assigned them to receive either a daily probiotic supplement containing Lactobacillus fermentum or placebo. After 28 days of receiving either the probiotic or placebo, they received nothing for one month (washout period) before crossing over to the other intervention. By the end of the study all the athletes had each had the probiotic and placebo formulations.

Athletic performance of the subjects was assessed using a treadmill, while blood samples were taken at regular intervals to measure the immune response. The length and severity of respiratory tract infections were recorded by the subjects themselves.

The researchers report no difference in running performance as a result of placebo or probiotics supplementation. On the other hand, the number of days of symptoms of URTI was halved when the athletes took the probiotic, compared to placebo.”
This is very interesting and easy for anyone to do. Fermented foods such as miso, tempeh, yogurt, and sauerkraut are natural sources of similar bacteria. Eating them frequently can keep the intestinal flora healthy. Our product Body Detox also contains ferments of these bacteria. Whenever one has had to take antibiotics it is wise to take probiotics in large doses for several months after finishing the antibiotics to repopulate the intestine. Of course if you are training heavily and getting sick you should be increasing your dose of MAP to keep your immune proteins at a high level and our immunity high.
