The Prescription Drug Business Is Alive and Well in America. Are You Supporting Their Habit?

The 2003 annual prescription drug report was just released, and Pfizer's cholesterol lowering drug Lipitor skyrocketed sales, with $6.8 billion alone, according to Forbes. Pfizer's total revenue was $29 billion, twice that of Johnson and Johnson, Merck, or GlaxoSmithKline, and three times the revenue of everyone else.

Merck's cholesterol-lowering drug, Zocor, pulled in $4.4 billion. The total money made on these cholesterol-lowering pills climbed up to 13.9 billion, an 11% increase from last year. Overall in 2003 there were $216 billion worth of prescription drugs sold — 9.6% more than last year.

Forbes gives the following prescription drug sales chart for comparison:

My comments:

Looking at this list, one can easily say that, except for Epogen, which is for cancer and renal patients who are anemic, and neurontin, which has been used for seizures and pain, ALL the rest are for conditions which are easily treated with more safety and less expense by lifestyle change and nutritional remedies.

  • The top three are cholesterol-lowering drugs. But lowering cholesterol is a piece of cake with a halfway decent diet and supplements.
  • Using Nexium and Prevacid long term to block stomach acid is ridiculous and dangerous.
  • Depression is not a deficiency of drugs but a deficiency of nutrients, an excess of toxins and lack of know how about life and how to handle it.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs cause damage to kidney, liver, and joints and should not be used.

Prescription-taking individuals, the government, and insurance companies should wake up and know that there are better solutions to the above. These better solutions would save hundreds of millions of wasted money by:

1. Directly lowering the cost of drugs.

2. Resulting in fewer hospitalizations due to adverse effects from drugs.

Next time you or a family member goes to the doctor, and, after the 30 second interview, he or she whips out the prescription pad, look into his or her eyes and say: "Doc, what non-drug remedies are there for my condition?"

If you see the doe in the headlights look, thank him/her and find a doc who can answer that question. You will find one at www.acam.org or http://icimed.com
