Drugs that can make you nuts and maybe dead! In 2002, 4 soldiers from Fort Bragg were accused of killing their wives and then 3 of them committed suicide. Each had been given the drug Lariam- an anti-malarial while serving in Afghanistan. Lariam is known to cause neuropsychiatric side effects that include nightmares, depression, hallucinations, paranoia, psychosis and aggression. The manufacturer, Roche, has received over 3000 reports of such psychiatric problems with this drug. Other commonly prescribed drugs such as Ritalin and Concert for ADHD, drugs for depression such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft have also caused hallucinations, suicide, aggression and violent behavior. Here is a list of some other drugs that are known to cause psychiatric side effects: Xanax, ativan, valium, klonopin and accutane. Also many other drugs commonly prescribed for heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and high blood pressure can cause problems with mood, sleep, and overall energy. A few precautions: 1. If you are going to start a new drug, be sure you get a list of side effects from your doctor. 2. Alert your friends and family that you are going to be starting a new medication. 3. If they or you notice any change in well being or behavior let your doctor know immediately. It may be a drug reaction. 4. If you have been on a prescription medication and haven’t felt much better than before taking it or have new “problems” that were not there prior to starting it, you may be experiencing a drug reaction and should alert your physician. 5.
