Are You Looking for a Good Multivitamin?
By Sue Minkoff, RN

I am always on the lookout for a multivitamin that rounds out my program of different specialty items that I find when reading the journals that Dr. Minkoff and I subscribe to.
This multivitamin must meet certain criteria:

•  I prefer a capsule
•  Not too many
•  It must be a good price
•  The multivitamin must be high quality
•  Its ingredients should be backed by the latest research

I believe the multivitamin that meets all of these criteria is "ActivNutrients®." With ActivNutrients, you take only 4 capsules/day.

Why take ActivNutrients? If you have been a past reader of this newsletter, then you know that many people, even in their late 20's, have high homocysteine levels.

Homocysteine is a naturally occurring amino acid in your blood. High levels of it promote cardiovascular disease - heart attacks and strokes.

Homocysteine is lowered by folic acid and B-12. So theoretically you could take a regular multivitamin with 500 mcg of B-12 and 400mcg of folic acid and either lower your homocysteine levels and/or be protected. But this is not necessarily true.

Why? Because you might be one of those individuals who does not convert regular B-12 or regular folic acid into its more utilizable end products. Then the homocysteine stays up.

Additionally, there are many other processes in the body that depend on the conversion of regular B-12 and folic acid into their more usable end products.

Good News! The formulator of ActivNutrients, biochemist Brian Blackburn, PhD, has added B-12 in the utilizable form of Methyl Cobalamin. His addition of Folic Acid as 5-formyl tetrahydrofolate is a more available form of folic acid for many people. Only expensive testing can tell a person whether genetically he/she needs the "methyl" form. So if the utilizable form is available in a multivitamin, why not take it?

Folic acid is recommended to help prevent birth defects. Why not take the more effective form?

Antioxidants as well as the B vitamins must be administered together because an imbalance can have "oxidative " properties. The antioxidants in ActivNutrients are perfectly balanced.

As you know, we live in a very toxic world and need both phases of the liver's detoxification process to work well. Multiple nutrients in ActivNutrients support both phases. These nutrients include:

•  Riboflavin
•  Niacin
•  Folic Acid
•  B-12
•  Carotenes
•  Vitamin C
•  Tocopherols
•  Selenium
•  Copper
•  Zinc
•  Manganese

ActivNutrients' B6 is in the bioavailable form of Pyridxal-5-phosphate. Calcium and Magnesium are available in the malate form, which helps in the Krebs cycle. And the zinc, selenium, manganese, potassium, and vanadium are available in the glycinate form, which helps detoxify the liver.

In short, this is a brilliant product! I highly recommend it! Take 4 a day. I do.
