An MRI Is Better Than a Mammogram, But . . .
An MRI is better than a mammogram, but mammography is a poor way to detect breast cancer. That is why I am so excited about using thermography for early detection. If you didn't look at the main article on thermography, please take a look at it.
According this week's New England Journal of Medicine, among 1,900 women in which 45 breast cancers were detected and evaluated, this is what researchers discovered:
MRI tests found 32 of the tumors and missed 13.
Mammography found only 18 of the tumors and missed 27.
Sometimes the MRI was better and sometimes the mammography was better. With one in eight women getting breast cancer, this is a very poor way to test for it. Another drawback was cost: MRI scans can cost more than $1,000 each, about ten times the cost of a mammogram, and insurance coverage is limited. Many women can't afford to do this on an annual basis. What should they do?
I am recommending that women do thermography in addition to self-exam (and on a limited individual basis, mammography). Of course lifestyle is the most important factor in preventing cancer in the first place, along with periodic evaluation of the hormone balance and immune system to make sure everything is in good working order.
Lifeworks Wellness Center is now offering breast thermography so that screening and early detection are possible. For more information and to set up a screening examination, call Tamora at 727-466-6789
