What can one do to lose fat?

The fat producing cells in the body are called adipocytes. Their product is making fat. They are located in many areas of the body for protection, warmth, and storage of energy.

Can a fat cell but turned into a muscle cell? That is, can you turn fat into muscle? Not any more than you can change a hair cell into a bone cell. A fat cell is a fat cell and a muscle cell is a muscle cell. But when there are more calories being eaten than used, the fat cell will take the excess calories and manufacture fat that is then stored in the fat cell. When it bulges it takes up more space (and weighs more) and you start seeing accumulations of it all over the body. A fat cell can increase its size by up to three times! If an average adult has 25 billion fat cells (some very obese people up to 350 billion) you can see that tripling the space that they take up could turn a 32 inch waist into a 50 inch waist.

In the other direction, when more calories are being burned than taken in, the body's hormone system sends messages to the fat cells to empty their stored fat so that stored energy can be used by the rest of the body. This decreases their size and so one looks leaner. Each gram of stored fat contains 9 calories of stored energy. An average person has about 60,000 to 100,000 calories of stored energy as fat.

The major hormone that turns on fat accumulation is insulin. Insulin is triggered when the blood sugar level rises. That is why when simple carbohydrates are eaten in excess and the insulin level is elevated fat storage is promoted.

We are born with a certain number of fat cells but the number can increase during puberty, pregnancy and even in adulthood if extreme amounts of weight are gained. Normally woman have more fat cells than men.

How can one manage this?

•  It's the "calories in" vs "calories out" that matter. To get rid of fat you have to take in less than you use.

•  Good food choices make the best sense. Whole, fresh, non processed, organic and without chemicals. If it comes in a plastic container or a drive through don't eat it.

•  It takes time to burn fat. A pound of fat is about 4000 calories (1 pound = 454 grams x 9 calories per gram = 4086 calories. If your calorie deficit is 583 calories per day you can lose a pound of fat a week. If you exercise an hour a day to help burn 2100 calories a day, and then eat 1500 calories, your 600 calorie deficit will cause you to lose about a pound a week of fat.

•  A 160 pound male with 15% body fat has 24 pounds of fat. That is a healthy amount. The same guy who weighs 200 pounds has 32% body fat and an extra 40 pounds of fat. At a pound a week of fat loss he is looking at a 40 week process.

•  Most people on weight loss diets lose muscle and bone and not very much fat. This is the opposite of what you want. The early weight loss is mostly water.

•  Almost all lose the weight because they are deficient in protein intake and this deficiency, insufficient calories, no exercise, gets them a lower weight but fatter.

•  Get a Tanaka scale that shows percentage of body fat and you can track where your weight loss is coming from. If your weight is down a and your percentage of fat is the same, you are losing your lean body tissue. Bad. If your weight is down and your percentage of body water is down, you are losing water, not fat.

•  If you starve yourself your body will burn less fat, as it thinks the famine is coming and is saving it up for the "lean" days to come. Its better to eat a little less, stop when full, make meals more frequent but smaller amounts, and exercise more. Getting at least 1½ -2 grams of lean protein per pound of body weight is important.

•  Master Amino Acid Pattern (MAP) can be substituted for protein. A full meal replacement amount of MAP is 10 tablets (for males and 6-7 tablets for females) and replaces 35 grams of quality animal protein and has only 4 calories . The same amount of chicken would be 300-400 calories.

•  Healthy-Thin is a supplement that can help in several areas: A) It will help decrease appetite. B) It will help remove excess body water C) It will help the body rid itself of fat stored toxins D) It will decrease the amount of carbs digested. Take 2 an hour before meals.
