With the new school year, are head lice in your child’s future?
Except for the common cold, head lice affect school age children more than any other communicable disease. Up to 6 million children are affected per year. The lice are passed in daycares and schools and attach to hair and feast on human blood from the scalp.
In many cases other family members also become infected. The bites do not hurt but the saliva and feces cause itching, which is usually the first sign.
The usual treatment is Lindane (Kwell). This drug is related to DDT.
Like DDT Lindane is in the organochloride family, accumulates in living organisms and is stored in body fat. Lindane is linked to cancer, is neurotoxic and may cause seizures, birth defects, kidney damage, anemia, and hormone problems. In my opinion is should not be used.
Alternatives include olive or coconut oil and use of the lice comb to get the eggs off the hair shaft.
