Have you had your homocyteine level checked lately?
Homocysteine is an amino acid that can be measured in the blood. Too much of it is related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease (fatty deposits in peripheral arteries).
Evidence suggests that homocysteine may promote atherosclerosis (fatty deposits in blood vessels) by damaging the inner lining of arteries and promoting blood clots. The incidence of strokes is also increased as is premature senility.
If one knows that his homocyteine is high it can be lowered by using a combination of B vitamins (especially B6 and B 12) and folic acid. They help to break down the homocysteine in the body.
Too many physicians overlook the fact that homocyteine is very common and easily treated. It should be part of a routine annual blood exam.
