Do you know what a GMO is?
GMO = genetically modified organism
What does this mean? It means taking foods and modifying their genes (chromosomes) by adding genes from other kinds of plants or animals using genetic engineering. This allows scientists to breed across the species barrier. This may result in inserting fish genes into tomatoes, viral genes in vegetables, and human genes in tobacco plants. Why? In order to increase shelf life, reduce spoilage, make the plant more tolerant of pesticides, or make drugs.
GMO’s have been around since the 1990’s but as much as 75% of processed foods contain them. Your morning cornflakes most likely were genetically modified so they would resist parasites while growing and resist spoilage while sitting on the shelf. Since labels are not required to tell you, you’d never know they are GMO corn. The same is true of the soybean oil in your salad dressing and many many other consumer products.
“Why should I care?” you ask...
Because this is a genetic experiment, and no one knows what the long term consequences of eating this kind of food will be on the body, or what affect this have on the environment and future generations.
Here are a few things to consider:
1. Food allergies: People who are allergic to brazil nuts got reactions from GMO soybeans that contained brazil nut genes. GMO corn in Taco Bells taco shells was reported to cause allergic reactions in 44 at least people.
2. Quality of nutrition: GMO soy has less phytoestrogens than natural.
3. What will eating a fish gene put into a tomato mean when eaten by a human? What if the person is a “vegetarian?”
4. Genes often have consequences beyond one generation. What does this mean for our offspring down the line? Not known! There is no requirement by the FDA to test GMO’s for safety. 5. It’s a secret. The US does not require labeling of GMO foods. So you may be eating them and not know. Why is this? Agribusiness is cozy with the regulatory agencies. At the Environmental Protection Agency, where the responsibility lies for policing GMO products, the number two exec post is occupied by Monsanto’s former top Washington lobbyist. Guess who is the largest manufacturer of GMO products? Monsanto, of course.
6. If you are interested in the Peyton Place web of lobbyists, regulatory agencies and government officials go to: www.ratical.org and www.foxriverwatch.com.
7. Some good things are happening. GMO’s have been banned in Mendicino and Marin Counties in California. The state of Vermont passed the Farmer Protection Act to hold legally responsible GMO manufacturers from contaminating other farmers crops. Bowing to pressure, McDonalds decided not to use GMO potatoes in their French fries.
8. What to do?
a. Eat organic
b. Avoid processed foods and fast foods!
c. Urge the government to require labeling.
