Why GERD Drugs Can Harm You?
In my opinion, some of the most promoted and best selling drugs in the world can be the most dangerous for you to take. Specifically, I am talking about medications that are used for heartburn, gastritis and GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease). They are all known to block stomach acid from being made. They have names that are well known, like Nexium, Prilosec, Zantac, Tagamet, and Pepcid. As a group they sell over $24 billion per year worldwide. That’s a lot!
If you believe the advertisements, it is the most natural thing in the world to take these medicines for this common symptom, and some even promote taking them before you eat a meal that you know will give you heartburn. Are they are benign as you would be made to believe? Here are few contrary facts to consider………
Why do we have stomach acid anyway?
Stomach acid has a number of functions which are very important to normal body functioning. One of them is protein digestion. Without stomach acid the enzyme in the stomach that digests protein (called pepsin) does not work. When pepsin doesn’t work, the body cannot fully digest proteins like meat, fish, and eggs. This eventually leads to protein malnutrition. Protein malnutrition leads to muscle wasting, immune problems, osteoporosis, premature aging, wrinkles, anemia and other serious problems.
Another very important function of stomach acid is to kill bacteria, yeasts, and parasites that enter our body with the food that we eat. Uncooked and partially cooked foods always have a bacterial and sometimes parasite load. Had any sushi lately or a rare steak? Did the chef preparing your dinner salad wash his hands after he went to the men’s room? Were the greens washed with soap? Was the lettuce grown in a country that uses feces used to fertilize them?
Even under the best conditions, bacteria and parasites come into our bodies with the food that we eat. If a strong acidic environment is not present in our stomachs to kill them, they may enter deeper into our body and cause illness.
A recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that individuals taking acid blocker medications, frequently got overgrowth of a toxic bacteria called Clostridium difficile. These bacteria can cause severe diarrhea (sometimes with blood), as well as intestinal inflammation, and colitis. Another bacteria called Helicobacter Pylorii is another culprit that can enter the stomach and cause ulcers. It also thrives in a non acid environment.
In our experience, many people who suffer from heartburn, indigestion, and gastric reflux, are actually stomach acid deficient. If they take nutritional supplements to replace stomach acid their symptoms often subside. This is due to the fact that an acid environment in the stomach causes the muscle at the top end of the stomach to close. When this muscle closes, these acidic juices in the stomach do not bubble back into the esophagus and cause irritation. If the acid level is not high enough, but still present to cause this valve to close, these semi acidic juices bubble up into the lower esophagus and cause burns. This is the cause of heartburn and reflux esophogitis. So the cure is more stomach acid not eradication of it.
Well supplemented stomach acid (betaine hydrochloride) one is able to be free from heartburn, and kill bacteria and parasites, and digest protein.
Another side effect of these acid blocking medications is impairment of absorption of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, beta-carotene, folic acid, iron, sodium, and zinc.
For those unfortunate individuals who have acquired Clostridium difficile, a nonprescription over-the-counter supplement called Saccharomyces boullardii can be taken and often clears up the condition. One should take 10 billion organisms, three times a day for several weeks until symptoms clear.
Heartburn and gastric reflux are not normal conditions. Low stomach acid or low stomach acid in combination with a bacterial caused ulcer are not either. There is always a cause that can be found, and usually that cause can be handled with safe and effective non-drug remedies. For more information on the subject, I recommend a very good book called No More Heartburn by Sherry Rogers M.D. In this book the causes and remedies of these conditions are discussed so that one can regain normal health without resorting to toxic drugs.
It is extremely important that if anyone is on any medication to block stomach acid by their physician, that they supplement with BioBuilde to be sure that they don't become protein malnourished. These drugs are very good at blocking nearly completely any stomach acid from being made and therefore protein digestion will be faulty. Since BioBuilde is predigested, it does not need stomach acid to be absorbed and utilized. We have also seen some cases, where stomach acid deficiency was actually caused by long-term protein malnutrition. Many vegetarians don’t eat meat because they don’t feel well after eating it or get bloated. Many of these people aren’t digesting it because they are acid deficient and protein deficient. Taking BioBuilde over a number of weeks has resulted in a return of normal stomach function and resolution of heartburn and gastric reflux symptoms for many suffering from this problem.
