Are Genetically Modified Foods Really Bad for You?
The government has been telling us since the early 90's that genetically modified foods are the same as the foods that humans have been eating for eons. Is this fiction or actual science?
There are scientists that are concerned. Is this concern warranted? Could these genetic modifications of our basic food supply cause introduction of toxins, like pesticides or heavy metals, into our food supply which would be harmful to us or our animals?
Many scientists have recommended testing of all GM foods before they enter the market but this has not occurred and the FDA has ignored the pleas of scientists to do so.[1]

Some safety tests which have been done are very concerning:
1. Organ system damage has been reported in lab animals and thousands of sick, sterile and dead farm animals have been traced to GM feed.[2]
2. A GM tomato called FlavrSavr showed evidence of toxins with digestive tract lesions.
Seven of twenty female rats fed this GM tomato got stomach lesions.[3] According to the FDA the tomatoes did not demonstrate a "reasonable certainty of no harm," [4] The Additives Evaluation Branch agreed that "unresolved questions still remain." (5] But they did not require that the tomato be withdrawn.[6]
3. GM diets have been shown to cause liver damage in rats that were fed the GM lectin potatoes had smaller and partially atrophied livers.[7] Those fed Monsanto's Mon 863 corn, had liver lesions and other indications of toxicity.[8] In the livers of rats fed Roundup Ready canola they were 12% - 16% heavier, possibly due to liver disease or inflammation.[9]
FDA internal memos, made public after a lawsuit, show that they were aware of these problems yet formal studies have not been done.
Are we at risk? If human clinical trials and post marketing follow up are not done we'll never know for sure. But why take the risk in the first place?
One can avoid GM foods completely and remain safer. There are plenty of organic non GMO foods available and one just has to look for them and avoid the GMO varieties. Read your labels.
How do you know if its GMO or not?
Buy organic: by definition certified organic must be 1)free from all GMO 2) grown without pesticides and artificial fertilizers 3)from animals not given antibiotics, hormones or other drugs.

References: 1. Calgene had submitted data on two lines of GM tomatoes, both using the same inserted gene. They voluntarily elected to market only the variety that was not associated with the lesions. This was not required by the FDA, which did not block approvals on the lesion-associated variety. The FlavrSavr tomato has since been taken off the market. After the FlavrSavr, no other biotech company has submitted such detailed data to the FDA. And the superficial summaries they do present to the agency are dismissed by critics as woefully inadequate to judge safety.
