Food additives and your health - which are the most dangerous?
Guess how many additives are added to our foods for the purpose of preserving them, coloring them, changing their texture, or adding flavor?
Over 3000 man-made chemicals!
If you eat non processed and non packaged foods in their natural state you are most likely to avoid them. But since its impossible to do this all of the time, here are list of the most toxic ones:
1. To prevent fats and oils from becoming rancid, PROPYL GALLATE, is added. It may be a carcinogen. Look for it in vegetable oils, meats, soup bases, and gum.
2. Similarly, BHA and BHT are added for reasons similar to number one. Look for it in cereals, chips, meats, gum etc. They both can cause cancer in rats.
3. Bromates are carcinogens in animals. Potassium Bromates are added to breads and rolls to make them lighter. This has been banned throughout the world except for the U.S and Japan.
4. One of the most common flavor enhancers is MSG (monosodium glutamate). This compound is a known excitotoxin. These are compounds that cause certain sensitive neurons to die. Common symptoms are headache, palpitations, nausea and diarrhea.
5. Equal/Nutrasweet/Aspartame is in thousands of diet products as an artificial sweetener. It has been linked to brain tumors, lymphomas, and leukemias in rats. Headaches, dizziness, hallucinations can occur in sensitive people.
6. Another articial sweetner is Acesulfame-K. It too is very common and has been linked to cancer in rats. Its breakdown product, acetoacetamide affects thyroid function in animals.
7. Olestra is a synthetic fat manufactured so that the body is unable to digest it. Thus it goes through the digestive systems without being absorbed. Look on the label for “Olean.” This can lead to diarrhea, gas and cramps. It may also block the absorption of fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin D, E, A, K, lycopene, lutien, and others. Deficiencies in these essential vitamins and antioxidants can lead to disease.
8. Processed meats are usually full of Sodium Nitrite or Nitrate. They give the red color to hot dogs, bacon, corned beef, etc. They can lead to cancer causing nitrosamines.
9. Trans fats in the form of hydrogenated vegetable oil. These cause heart disease and diabetes. They are used because they prolong shelf life and are inexpensive. Margarine, baked goods like crackers, cookies, salad dressings, etc are usually full of them.
10. Any dye, blue, red, yellow may be cancer causing.
What to do?
1. Eat organic. 2. Avoid processed anything. If it comes in a plastic package and has added ingredients, chances are high it’s full of these and other things.
3. It’s impossible to avoid them all. But if 80% of the time you can eat REAL FOOD. Your body will forgive you for the rest if the rest of your nutrition is optimized as in #4.
