Girls.... Is hair loss a problem for you?
Hair loss in women is very different than hair loss in men. In women, it is usually reversible. Since hair is protein, there are many nutritional requirements to manufacture it. These would include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and hormones. Therefore a careful look into the levels of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and hormones often show deficiencies, which when corrected result in new hair growth. Since the cycle of hair growth occurs over quite a few months, usually six or so, there may be some lag time between the correction of the nutritional problem and visibly apparent new hair sprouts.
For many women, excess stress leading to low adrenal hormone levels is commonly seen with hair loss. The second most common factor is low thyroid but low progesterone and testosterone, with or without elevated levels of dihydrotestosterone are also sometimes observed.
Hormone levels can be easily gotten from saliva, blood, or urine, depending on the physician and his preference to check this out.
The search for thyroid abnormalities should include a T3, T4, and TSH. We always have patients also track morning underarm temperatures for a minimum of three days as well. The vast majority of hypothyroid patients have underarm temperatures that are 96° or lower first thing in the morning.
Postpartum hair loss may be seen due to falling progesterone levels. However, low progesterone in pre-menopause, or a relatively low progesterone in an estrogen dominant person, can also produce hair loss. In these cases supplemental progesterone can be helpful. Progesterone is also antagonistic to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) and may be helpful, since DHT inhibits hair growth. DHT effect may also be reduced with herbs such as saw palmetto, pygeum, and beta sitosterol.
We always suggest that the patient get an ION panel from Metametrix labs to check the blood for deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, essential fats, and amino acids.
Many patients have commented that by adding BodyHealth Complete, a total multivitamin multi-mineral, antioxidant blend with 16 organic fruit and vegetable concentrates, and BioBuilde (eight essential amino acids) that hair growth and thickness are noticeably improved. There have been some instances, where hair color has even gone back to normal.
The health of one's hair can be a very early warning sign that there is a deficiency or toxicity in the body. This is because hair is a rapidly growing substance that requires multiple nutritional and hormonal factors. Therefore, if you begin to see excess hair coming out on your brush it or see lots collecting in the shower drain, it should not be ignored. Usually the condition can be remedied, and the sooner it is detected and handled the sooner the condition will normalize.
