Fat: Things You May Not Know

Fat is not just for storing calories for the next famine. Fat is actually an active tissue that sends messages and hormones to the rest of the body. It is also a place where chemicals and pesticides and other fat soluble toxins get stored. Someone even has a theory that people get fat so they have more storage places for the toxins that come into their body. It may be that healthier people get fat in response to toxins, and unhealthier people just get sick if they can’t dilute them out or remove them through healthy detoxification.

Fat cells attract immune cells called macrophages that cause inflammation in other parts of the body. As people reduce their weight, the amount of inflammation often reduce,s too. This is a side benefit to getting leaner. Inflammation is one of the causes of vascular disease, arthritis, and other chronic conditions. We know that people with excess fat have higher associations with diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Other negative factors from excess fat are chemicals that increase blood pressure, and another that increases the chances of a blood clot. Fat also makes estrogen, which can lead to hormone related cancers in both men and women.

So, fat is a lot more complex than researchers originally imagined.

What can you do if you have excess fat?

  1. Avoid “bad fats”. These include trans fats, which are man-made and unhealthy fats, such as margarine, Crisco, deep-fried foods, and most baked goods found in plastic packages on grocery shelves.
  2. Eat good fats: cold pressed oils, fish oils, vegetable oils like coconut, and palm oils.
  3. Avoid refined carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates include processed white-flour foods in which the grain and fiber has been removed, for example; sugary cereals, white bread, white rice, pasta and noodles from white flour, white crackers, etc.
  4. Exercise for an hour a day, six days a week. Two days a week, add strength training.
  5. Have one "cheat meal" a week, in which you eat whatever you like!
