For Men and Women Only: Will Estrogen Give You Cancer?
When your estrogen gets metabolized (broken down), it gets turned into various substances. Among them are two major players of interest. The "good guy/gal" is 2-Methoxyestradiol, "the protective estrogen". The "bad guy/gal" is 4-Hydroxyestrogen. It is a potent carcinogen. According to Dr. Jeffrey Bland ,Ph.D., environmental toxins such as dioxin, and DDT etc. stimulate the production of the carcinogenic 4-Hydroxyestrogen. It's derivatives react with DNA and may initiate breast, ovarian, uterine and prostate cancer.
Some "bodies" produce more of the "bad guy" than is necessary.
What to do? Two things:
1) Know how much of the good guy and how much of the bad guy your body produces. This is done by a 24-Hour urine hormone test through AAL laboratories. This can be done through your complementary health care provider. This test is done routinely at Lifeworks Wellness Center. It also shows a woman her levels of progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, and the three different estrogens. If they are low, she can choose to use natural hormones. This test provides the basis of knowing which hormones should be compounded by the pharmacist so they are in proper amounts for her body. I do not recommend the use estrogen creams from the health food store shelf or by mail order that are not in the exact proportion that your body needs. Without doing this test to find out your exact levels of each estrogen, called estriol, estrone, and estradiol and by using creams off the shelf, you could be giving your body estrogens that would predispose you to estrogen related cancers. A doctor who can help you with this may be found at www.acam.org . or call Lifeworks Wellness Center for a referral to one in your area. In a future article , I will discuss these different estrogens. One is thought to be "beneficial" another not so beneficial and the other can go either way.
The 24-hour Urine test for hormones is expensive and should be done at some point. If it doesn't immediately fit into your budget, you can do the "good"(2-hydroxyestrogen) to "bad" (16-hydroxyestrogen) ratio test. Your health care practitioner can order this for you.
2)Increase the levels of 2-Methoxyestradiol, the "good guy". This is done primarily through diet and supplementation.
The following promote the "good guy 'and /or metabolism of estrogen in a positive direction: cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts; flaxmeal, tumeric, rosemary, soy in moderation, clover green tea, fiber, and lycopene from watermelon and cooked tomatoes.
Indole-3-Carbinol or I-3-C is a supplement that can induce the death of tumor cells and may prevent the development of estrogen-enhanced cancers. Its effect complements the benefits of soy.
Discuss supplementation of I-3-C with your complementary health practitioner regarding the correct dosage.
And don't forget you broccoli!
