Are the New Energy Saving Light Bulbs Worth Switching to?
Even though Al Gore and the EPA say you should do it, you might think twice before buying into the new energy saving light bulbs...
Many consumers wanting to save energy and do the right thing have begun to replace their old style incandescent light bulbs with the energy saving and money saving fluorescent varieties. One such consumer, BB, living in Maine went out and bought several dozen of them in her home. One of them broke. The mercury inside the bulb spilled everywhere, shag carpet included. Now more than a month later her child's bedroom remains quarantined off until she can afford to pay the hazardous materials company $2000 for the cleanup of mercury that was released when the bulb broke.
The spiral shaped long lasting bulbs are more energy saving that the SUV like energy guzzling incandescent, but disposal is a real problem. Since they contain deadly mercury that cannot be simply thrown away or if you break one- now you have hazardous waste in your home or office that need professionals with special equipment to deal with it.
One of the biggest promoters of the low energy bulbs is IKEA. But not only do they sell them but they also provide one of the few recycling centers for burned out bulbs. Mercury free fluorescent are in development but they are probably 5-10 years away.
While we do care about energy efficiency, it seems at this point that the downside of breakage and mercury exposure outweighs the benefits of energy savings. When the technology catches up they will be a good idea.
Of course a more major threat is the mercury in one's fillings. From these one gets a daily exposure of mercury vapor and toxic levels in all body organs. Mercury is implicated in many serious conditions from chronic fatigue, to autoimmune conditions, to MS to cancer. For info on a detox protocol to handle this go to BodyHealthDetox.com.
