Guess Who the Drug Culture is Targeting Now?
To maintain its empire, Big Pharma needs customers. Age is no barrier. The average nursing home senior is on six or more drugs: for high cholesterol, high blood sugar, arthritis pain, sleep, high blood pressure, and depression. Sometimes it takes two drugs for each symptom. But to expand, why not penetrate the other end of the age spectrum? Amphetamines for school children has been an easy sell. So have antidepressants. And antibiotics by the mega-ton for any cough or cold or runny nose. And the latest, why not acid reflux drugs for infants? The adult market for GERD (gastroesophogeal reflux disease) has been a mega billion dollar market in adults. Why not create it in infants? And so they did.
A recent study shows that infants are treated for GERD unnecessarily. Normal spit ups or food intolerances are diagnosed as GERD and given prescriptions.
In the November issue of the journal, Pediatrics, the study author Vikram Khoshoo MD, PhD, writes:

"Parents have come to view normal spitting up as a medical condition that requires treatment. But in many cases it is more of a laundry issue than a medical issue," he tells WebMD. "We are replacing Tide and Febreze with Prevacid and Zantac."
There has been a 7X increase in acid blocking medications in children since 1999. Yet there is practically no research on the safety of using these drugs in young infants. Common sense and a little scientific knowledge would dictate otherwise. Acid blocking drugs turn off the hydrochloric acid in the stomach. When there is no hydrochloric acid, protein digestion and mineral absorption are impaired. This can lead to serious side effects. But who would know? The drugs are being used without proof of safety. The growing brain, organs, immune health may all suffer from such unsafe practices.
Irritable babies that spit up or vomit often have real symptoms. But to think that the reason is lack of acid blocking drugs is only a symptom of not looking very hard for a real cause. In the nursing infant the most common is maternal foods that the baby is sensitive to. In infants on formula, it is an intolerance to that kind of milk. Allergy can also play a part and so can abnormal bacteria in the infant's intestine. Some detective work may be needed by the family and the doctor but one thing we do know, is that the long-term safety of treating infants with powerful acid-suppressing drugs is NOT known.
Experimentation on children is unethical and parents must be aware that this is going on.
Occasionally the short term use of a prescription medication can be lifesaving. However the routine use of such medications, especially in children should be avoided. Parents must seek out health care practitioners who are sympathetic to this and have enough interest in the child and family to help and do no harm.

These are crimes against our future and unless we take action, the scourge will go on.
