More Reasons to Consider Sunshine
Cancers of the breast, colon, and ovary are reduced by up to half by taking a daily dose of vitamin D. So say recentscientific reviews of the last 40 years.
We had a recent patient at our clinic that was on two blood pressure medicines when he came to us and after measuring his vitamin D blood level, we found it was low. After 4 weeks of oral Vitamin D his levels normalized and so did his blood pressure- he is now off his medications!
So vitamin D is not only protective in various cancers, but also heart disease, diabetes, schizophrenia, bone health (rickets and osteoporosis), and multiple sclerosis.
Naturally, Vitamin D is made by the action of sunshine on the skin. Sun-phobia and the use of sun screens have created an epidemic of Vitamin D deficiency. Unless a person is taking 1000 units of Vitamin D per day (as suggested by the American Journal of Public Health) or getting 20-30 minutes a day of direct sunlight they are likely to be deficient. In the northern climes or places with little sunshine, for example, the UK, 60% of the population has inadequate levels by the end of winter!
Lack of vitamin D has been linked to high rates of heart disease in Scotland where sunlight is lacking most of the year. The factor of the Mediterranean Diet may be the sunshine factor as much as the food itself.
The vitamin is only stored in the body for about two months. So a continual supply is needed to maintain levels.
Only a blood test can diagnose deficiency. We suggest that everyone be check annually for this. It is probably a larger risk factor than cholesterol for disease.
BodyHealth Complete and BodyHealth Complete + Detox have 400 IU of vitamin D3- the active form. If you are taking it daily, you are well on your way to having healthy levels. Blood test can tell you for sure and whether you need to add some sunshine, cod liver oil or other supplement.
