Cholesterol Lowering Drugs
Did you know that 20% of people over 55 years old are prescribed cholesterol lowering drugs? Did you know that foods can reduce cholesterol as much as statin drugs without the risk of cancer, muscle injury, liver failure, CoQ 10 deficiency, and worse, according to a year long study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 66 patients with elevated blood lipids were prescribed diets high in plant sterols that contained soy protein, oat bran, barley, okra, eggplant,, and almonds. Those motivated patients (30%) were able to lower LDL cholesterol concentrations >20% which was similar to the lowering effect of the Statin drug and diet. Those with high cholesterol do have choices to help their body regulate toward health without dangerous drugs. This is a good example of how it may be done.
But a very important point that this article does not mention is that artery inflammation is the cause of artery disease, NOT CHOLESTEROL. Did you know that over 50% of people with heart attacks have NORMAL CHOLESTEROL levels?
Artery inflammation and heart disease are greatly increased (300%) by high homocysteine- an amino acid found in the blood. If your level is above 9 it can be lowered by taking extra amounts of B6, Folic acid and B12. If you haven’t had your homocyteine checked by your doctor, he can order the test. While he’s at it, also check your thyroid status. If your TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone) is above 1.5, and you have cold feet and hands, thinning hair, slowed bowels, loss of eyebrows at the outer edges, dry skin, you are probably hypothyroid as well- which also causes high blood lipids.
Once these two things are corrected and you eat a high plant sterol diet, and extra B vitamins if needed, you’re cholesterol and homocyteine and thyroid are sure to normalize- and so will your risk of illness caused by these factors.
