An Opinion on Cancer and its Causes
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in this country and if
the trends continue, it will soon overtake heart disease as the
number one cause of death. The combination of a toxic environment,
poor dietary habits and stress filled lifestyles is contributing to
the incidence of cancer at ever accelerating rates.
One way to view cancer is to think of it as a chronic progressive
illness. We say this because for many people, the cancer has been
growing silently in their bodies for 8-10 years before it is ever
symptomatic and diagnosed. This chronic condition continues to smolder
along, slowly enlarge, and then silently metastasize. Then late in
the disease, one gets the symptoms that bring an urgent visit to the
doctor.
The cancer cells can only do this because they have camouflaging tricks
to disguise themselves from the body's immune surveillance system.
The tumor grows from one cell, to the billions of cells in a pinhead
sized baby tumor, and then to the hundreds of trillions of cells
in a thimble sized tumor. Most tumors are not diagnosed until they
are at this stage. Often by then, there are metastases in other
organs which makes for a poorer prognosis.
Logically, best time to diagnose a potential problem is before the
abnormal cells have become cancerous. Scientists have observed that
there are known factors that may induce a normal cell to become cancerous.
Some of these known factors are:
Toxicity: There is significant evidence that environmental
toxins are the leading cause of many cancers. At the top of the list
are chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals. All of us have hundreds
of these substances in our system in measurable amounts. When these
substances enter the body, they poison the cells and damage the DNA.
This is why they are called carcinogens. When these toxic substances
reach a critical level, a healthy cell will become cancerous.
Infections: There are viruses known to cause some cancers,
like Hepatitis B as a cause for liver cancer, and human papilloma virus
as a cause for cervical cancer. Some researchers have also found evidence
suggesting that certain yeast toxins and parasites can be implicated
in the causation of cancer. When these are discovered, they can be
treated and are then no longer a threat to the body.
Deficiency: A body that is deficient in essential nutrients
cannot produce a healthy immune response. If body levels of minerals,
vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids, and antioxidants are
low, one is predisposed to illness.
We know from testing thousands of patients that most people have
accumulated toxicities, deficiencies and low-grade silent infections.
Often people have little or no symptoms. One may feel a bit tired,
or lack of energy or other minor complaint. However, without diagnostic
testing, these will not be discovered. Therefore, the best preventive
medicine is to screen patients for problems in these areas before they
become ill. Our viewpoint is that we may be able to prevent cancer
if we make an early diagnosis of toxicity, deficiency and infection,
and correct whatever is found.
In our view, then, the proper way to regain health and optimize
someone's care once cancer is diagnosed is to:
Detoxify them from the accumulated chemicals, pesticides
and heavy metals.
Handle all chronic infections.
Correct all nutritional deficiencies.
Protect the immune system and organs from free radical
damage that can be caused by chemo and radiation therapy.
Enjoy a diet that is pro health and free of chemicals,
additives, hormones, and antibiotics.
This approach should be taken even when the patient desires traditional
chemo or radiation therapy.
The other significant factor when one has cancer is to minimize new
toxins from entering the body. This is very important. As much as
possible one should eat organic fruits and vegetables, and dairy
products from cows that are hormone and antibiotic free. Meats should
be from animals that are grass fed and free to roam about. Be careful
with fish as many are laden with the potent toxin mercury.
Probably the most important factor in an anticancer diet is to avoid
sugar in any form. There is new research confirming the link between
a high sugar diet with increased cancer risk. This research just
reconfirms what was discovered many years ago by Nobel Prize winner
Otto Warberg who discovered that sugar "fed" cancer cells. Soda
pop, cakes, cookies, candy bars, and fruit juices are "no no's" for
the cancer patient.
The famous exercise guru and health advocate, Jack LaLanne, now 89
years young, had a rule about his diet that is worth following.
His rule is: if man made it, I don't eat it.
By acting on the simple concepts listed above, one can work oneself
back to health, even with the diagnosis of cancer. It may be a long
road, but the road is there to be followed and can lead one to better
health. Many have done it and you can too! Good luck.
