Boost of Friendly Bacteria Helps Colon Ulcers

Scotland scientists have found a new way to combat the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, a painful swelling and ulcerous condition of the colon. By boosting the amount of friendly bacteria in the intestines - a treatment known as "probiotics" - the symptoms of ulcerative colitis can be drastically reduced.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the US suffer from ulcerative colitis, and the pain, discomfort, and swelling considerably disrupts the daily lives of those with the condition.

Researchers made the breakthrough when they discovered that patients with ulcerative colitis have low amounts of friendly bacteria. This new probiotic treatment allows them to "go about their daily lives without worrying about the symptoms that makes living with the disease a struggle," said one professor.

Previously patients used steroids and anti-inflammatories to deal with the problem. In contrast, the probiotic bacteria boost has no known side effects.

My comments:

The largest organ in the body by surface area is the intestines. If you stretched them out they would cover more than 10 tennis courts. The nerves that go from the intestine to the brain are more plentiful than those that go through the spinal cord. This just goes to show that the exposure to the rest of the body from the intestinal lining and the amount of communication going to the brain from that exposure is enormous.

The number of bacteria that live in the colon outnumber the total number of cells in the entire body by a factor of several hundred.

The body of bacteria in us is more plentiful than our own cells!

The kind of bacteria that live there, and what they eat and excrete (poop), is of huge significance to our health.

"Good bacteria" are good because they support the rest of our body. They manufacture vitamins and other components we need, and do not produce toxic products that harm us.

"Bad bacteria" do the opposite. They eat nutrients we need and excrete wastes that are toxic to us. They also undo the safely detoxified body poisons that our livers have processed, making the processed poisons once again poisonous, to re-enter and stress our bodies anew.

It is easy to see that when the intestines are not colonized with good bacteria, we can be systemically ill. When large portions of the colon are inflamed, this magnifies the systemic effect.

Good bacteria are the most important requirement for a healthy intestine. That is why "good flora" should be taken in some form by everyone. Fermented organic yogurts and kefirs are two sources of good bacteria. Miso is another. For many individuals, supplementing with the bacteria directly is the best way to do this.

The good bacteria source I like the best is from Zymogen. To order our Zymogen bacteria supplement, call LifeWorks Wellness Center at 877-543-3975.
