Apples and Onions Can Prevent Which Cancer?

Why would a diet plentiful with apples and onions cut pancreatic cancer risk by 25% in non smokers and 59% in smokers?

Because these foods are rich in flavonols. This is according to a recent article in the American Journal of Epidemiology. What are flavonols? Flava comes from the Latin meaning yellow. These are compounds that are naturally in fruits and vegetables and give them their characteristic colors from yellows to blues to reds. Generally, the richer the color, the more flavonol the food contains.

Each year in the US there are 38,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer with 34,000 deaths from the disease. The survival rate for five years is less than 1/50. Therefore prevention is key. The study showed that those with the highest consumption of flavonols had lower risk of cancer. Since smokers have a much higher risk of pancreatic cancer, the flavonols were even more protective in them. The anti cancer effects may be due to the reduction of oxidative stress and their ability to inhibit abnormal cell division.
