If Women Get Menopause, What Do Men Get?

Men go through a "change of life" just as women do.

Though it may not seem as dramatic as menopause, waning hormone levels in men can produce physical and behavioral changes that lower the quality of life.

For most men, starting in their late 30s and early 40s, as hormone levels fall or as cells become less sensitive to hormones, symptoms emerge. In men, the male hormones are known as “androgens”-- thus men go through “andropause.”

Androgens, male sex hormones produced in the testes and adrenal glands, are responsible for typical male sexual characteristics. Testosterone is the most well known of these hormones.

The others are DHEA, Dihydrotestosterone, and Androstenedione. Other hormones that are not androgens, but still play a role, are Estrone and Progesterone.

Like women, as men enter middle age they lose nearly half of the hydrochloric acid in their stomachs. This acid is necessary to activate the digestive enzymes needed to break down protein. As a result, many men may become unknowingly protein deficient.

The deficiency can be even greater if males are on prescription or over-the-counter antacid or anti-ulcer drugs such as Tagamet, Pepcid, Nexium, and Prilosec. These drugs are taken by tens of millions of people, and since they essentially block stomach acid from forming, an inability to digest protein and protein deficiency can result.

The important hormones are protein-based, so as a result of such protein deficiency, we can see lower body levels of these hormones and thus symptoms of andropause.

Two other main causes of hormone depletion are physical stress and toxins. Long and stressful work hours combined with environmental pollutants from a poor diet and exposure can cause low hormone levels. As a result, you can lose your energy for life. Low levels of testosterone and other male hormones are also correlated with thinning hair, muscle loss, diminished sex drive, insomnia, fat accumulation, and weak bones.

One way to ensure that protein levels are adequate, with or without any type of medication, is to take BioBuilde. BioBuilde needs no digestion and is absorbed in the bloodstream within 23 minutes of taking it. By supplementing your body with the protein it needs, BioBuilde can help reverse many of the symptoms of andropause that are due to inadequate protein.

Men can also be tested for their hormone levels, and should be. If they are symptomatic or the results are low, a lab test for levels of minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acid deficiencies should be done before any hormone replacement is undertaken. Often the low levels are from deficiencies. Handling them first is essential to rebuilding heath.
