Why Your Alarm Clock Might Be Ruining Your Health
Did you know that a typical electric alarm clock beside your bed can emit as much electromagnetic radiation as a powerline? Not many of us would sleep under a powerline night after night, but when we have our clock three feet from our bed, the effect is similar, according to Dr. Joseph Mercola.
As technology increases, electromagnetic fields, called "EMF" for short, are emitting increasing amounts of radiation. Grouped together, the EMF is so abundant that scientists call it "electrosmog." From microwaves to television, cell phones to electronic toothbrushes, the "Gauss" level (a gauss is the unit of measure of magnetic field strength) in our electrosmog is frightening.
Now cell phones that transfer and receive images, email, and web data at high speeds require a new "Third Generation Technology" (3G) that promises to put even more radiation into our already electrosmogged environment.
The Dean of the Public School of Health at State University of New York attributes 30 percent of childhood cancers to electromagnetic field radiation. The Department of Energy admits EMFs have "biological effects." And nearly fifteen years ago the EPA recommended classifying EMFs as a "probable human carcinogen," but had to retract the classification due to overwhelming criticism and a lack of more conclusive evidence, according to Dr. Mercola.
Despite the lack of conclusive evidence, various studies have drawn links between EMFs and miscarriages, birth defects, childhood cancers, headaches, stress, nausea, chronic fatigue, brain tumors, and more.
You are not powerless against the surrounding EMFs. Here are twelve measures you can take to reduce exposure:
1. Before buying a house, evaluate its proximity to major powerlines, transformers, substations, and antennas. If you already live in such an undesirable location, don't let your children play near any of these areas.
2. Don't use electric blankets. If you do, at least completely unplug them before sleeping at night.
3. Avoid waterbeds. The water vibrations for extended periods of time while you sleep can generate considerable EMF.
4. Move your electric clock at least 6 feet away from your bed while you sleep.
5. Avoid fluorescent lights - they emit more EMF than regular lights.
6. Don't stand too close to microwave ovens (especially don't put your face up against the window to watch your food cook).
7. Give some distance between your couch and TV, at least 6 feet. Sitting too close to a TV can do more than ruin your eyes.
8. Rethink drying your child's hair with a hair dryer. These devices emit quite a bit of EMF and children's brains and nervous systems are still maturing.
9. Buy glasses with plastic rather than metal frames. These metal frames can act like an antenna to focus EMFs directly into your brain.
10. Avoid buying that snazzy new electric toothbrush that vibrates a million times a second in your mouth. These too give off EMF.
11. Arrange the electronic appliances in your office toward your walls rather than directly next to you. For example, a small refrigerator sitting beside you all day can easily be repositioned in the room to give you more distance from the EMF it radiates.
12. Don't sit too close to your computer screen. The computer emits EMF from all directions, and so-called "radiation screens" do not block anything but glare.
