The Concern of Aging: Health, Money, or Loneliness?

As people age, what worries them the most: Health, money, or being lonely? A recent survey of 1000 people gave the following results: 55% said health, 20% said money, 9% said loneliness.

I am not surprised at this. It is interesting that when people are young the future seems very far away, and so personal habits to preserve health seem irrelevant. “Eat, drink and be merry” is the motto. Not a bad motto depending on if the “eat and drink” are mostly in a healthful vein. Hard to argue with being merry, as this is always a good thing.

But with aging comes a diminished tolerance for "body wrecking." The philosophy of eat and drink leave the body not so merry in the morning. As a consequence, to some finally comes the wisdom of healthy living.

When I was in college, I did a Hatha Yoga class, and the instructor told the class something about the benefits of healthy living I never forgot. He said, “For your first 20 years of life you can do anything you want -- your body seems invincible. For the next twenty years, you can mostly make it on the momentum of waning youth and grace. For the twenty years after that, you body will take you to hell.”

So true.

But frighteningly, the second twenty years isn’t lasting twenty any longer, and for many, even the first twenty are already hell. The toxic environment and poor nutrition have etched into this significantly. We are seeing diabetes and obesity in preteens, along with learning problems, behavior problems, and a litany of other chronic conditions -- all due in the main to poor lifestyle habits.

Restoring the body's health is possible -- at any age. Just last night I ran into a friend that I had not seen for some time. She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had undergone surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. It was a brutal process. I had seen her at the end of the treatment some 6 months ago while she was still on large doses of steroids and she looked and felt dreadful. Since then, after completing her medication, she spent 48 days doing the Hubbard Detoxification Program using sauna, exercise and vitamins to rid her system of the drugs and radiation she had encountered in her treatment.

She looks like a new person. Her hair, which she had totally lost, was now back -- black, shinny, and soft. Her skin was bright and clear. She had shed most of the weight gain. She was talking about training for a triathlon.

I would never have believed this was the same body. It looked brand new. She was positively radiant.

So rehabilitating health is possible.

Even better is not letting it go down hill in the first place. Then in the future when someone calls and asks the survey question, “What worries you the most about the future,” your answer can be, “I’m not really worried about the future. I have my health. I have energy. I have my mental faculties. And I am going to use my abilities to contribute to my family, my church, and to mankind to make the world a better place.”

Who do you know who wouldn’t agree with that?

The determination to have it begins today. Which choice are you going to make?
