Are TV ads that promote prescription drugs telling you the truth?

The Annals of Family Medicine published an analysis this month of TV ads that promote prescription drugs and concluded that the ads lie to the public about the benefits of pharmaceuticals and ignore the practical health strategies and lifestyle changes that would in most cases resolve the problem.

Even the ex commissioner of the FDA, David Kessler, agrees that TV advertising of drugs to the public is outrageous and feels that this should never have been legalized. He has even written an editorial condemning it. The law allowing it was passed in 1997, after his tenure as FDA Commissioner. There is no other country in the western world that allows this kind of direct advertising.

The typical ad shows professional actors in a fairy tale that starts with the misery of high cholesterol, erectile dysfunction, or high blood pressure and in a mere 60 seconds the actors have regained their youth, health, or virility with just one dose of a potentially dangerous and harmful drug that in most cases is not needed.

The truth is that most drugs don't heal anything and only mask the symptoms of the underlying condition. While that symptom may be temporarily reduced, the drug will often cause other damaging side effects that can leave the patient worse. Hundreds of thousands of people die or are put in the hospital each year as a result of the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. Factually, pharmaceutical drugs actually pose the greatest danger to the health and safety of the American public than any other cause.

Drugs can cause nutritional deficiencies which are seldom monitored by doctors or the FDA. Unfortunately, the FDA panels that approve these medications are often composed of scientists who have strong financial affiliations to the same companies.

Typical examples of the potential severe side effects of pharmaceutical drugs are antidepressant drugs that cause diabetes or suicide, cholesterol lowering statins that can cause severe muscle injury and liver damage, and hormone replacement drugs like Premarin have been proven to cause breast cancer and heart attacks and not prevent them.

There are some simple measures that anyone can take to improve their health:

1. Do The BodyHealth 7-Day Total Body Energizing Cleansing System. This program includes a diet, exercise and supplement program to get the body working as it was meant to.

2. Many continue the program or a modified form of it until they reach their ideal weight.

3. See an alternative health care practitioner for an evaluation. Go to www.acam.org for a list of physicians. If you are taking prescription medications do not stop them or modify the dosage or add any diet or supplement program until you speak with your physician.
