7 Steps To Staying Healthy This Winter
by Dr. David Minkoff, M.D.
Our body's immune system constantly fights off infections from harmful bacteria and viruses that enter our body. Much of the time we are unaware of these internal battles because sickness only occurs when the bacteria or virus overpowers our immune system. Remaining healthy involves strengthening the immune system so that when harmful invaders do enter the body, one's natural defenses can adequately handle the virus.*
Step #1: Wash Your Hands Often and Keep Them Away From Your Face
You may think that using your fingernail to remove a piece of food lodged between your teeth would be an innocuous thing, and never think to wash your hands before doing so. But actually, it is a way to transmit germs from your hand into your mouth (or nose, if that is where the finger is going!) and could give you the flu.
The main areas that germs enter our body are through the mouth and nose, whether in the food we're consuming or from touching our face with our hands. When unclean hands touch your nasal or mouth membranes, germs come for the ride and can locally invade and cause disease.
If you want to avoid the flu, keep your hands away from your face. Wash your hands before eating. Wash your hands after going to the bathroom, and wash your hands after greeting people. Don't rub your eyes, chew on rubber pens, or put your fingers on your mouth while you think. You wouldn't put your tongue on a doorknob or an elevator button, but when you touch these surfaces and then use the same unwashed hand on your face, the effect is similar.
Step #2: Get Adequate Sleep
Sleep deprivation impairs healing and lowers immune function. Unfortunately most of us have busy schedules and may skimp on sleep time. This is not a good idea.
Every person needs a different amount of sleep. The hours can vary between 7-11 hours a night. You know you're getting adequate sleep if you wake up feeling refreshed. A nap too is a great idea. Plan for it!
Step #3: Boost Your Immune System
You can actually give your immune system, the body's defense system against viruses, a direct boost. While no single supplement can prevent the flu, Body Detox contains specific immune enhancers to boost your body's immunity.
Step #4: Reduce Your Toxic Burden
Every day we assimilate into our body toxic pesticides from food, toxins in smoke from cigarettes and cars, toxic mercury vapors from your dental amalgams, toxic bacteria from your computer keyboard, and more. Americans actually have around 90 different toxins in their bodies, according to Environmental Working Group [1]. All of these toxins add up to a deadly force that the immune system has to battle on a daily basis.
When a body already struggling with these toxins encounters a virus such as the flu, it can be the straw that breaks your immune system. The key is to reduce your toxic load in order to free up more resources for your immune system. Body Detox's ingredients lock onto toxins in your body -- toxins embedded in your blood, your cell membranes, and even those affecting the delicate inner cell structures -- and helps your body to remove them through your bowels.
Step #5: Give Your Immune System the Protein It Needs
Another way to stay healthy is by giving your immune system the protein it needs. Like many other functions in the body, your immune system relies upon proteins to function. If you don't get enough, like a car running on just a half a quart of oil your immune system won't function properly.
Unfortunately, people with even minor protein deficiencies can have lowered immune function. Even when standard blood panels show normal blood proteins, tests of amino acid levels may show insufficient levels.
BioBuilde is an amino acid supplement that allows your body to convert more amino acids into protein than any other dietary protein or protein supplement available. This protein all goes toward essential building materials for your body, as needed by your immune system.
Step #6: Reduce Your Sugar Intake Have you ever considered how flu season coincides with the holiday season? As Americans consume record high levels of sugar during Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and Valentine's Day, the flu also hospitalizes thousands. The correlation is no coincidence. Sugar takes a direct toll on your immune system. Sugar slows oxygen transport across cells, decreases red blood cell activity, and suppresses your immune system. Sugar can also compromise your body's ability to fight off bacterial infections.
Think of your immune system as an army of soldiers: If you eat the amount of sugar found in a box of chocolates, this can put many of the soldiers to sleep. Sugar is so bad for your body that the American Dietetic Association considers sugar consumption to be the third major cause of degenerative disease [2].
Step #7: Wash Your Food and Eat Organic
There's a saying about food preparation: "Wash it, peel it, boil it -- or else don't eat it." By simply washing your food before eating it, you can minimize many of the pesticide residues on food. Wash the food in warm water with a mild soap and use a soft scrub brush if possible. Food you can peel the skin off, of course, would not require as much washing, but you can still transfer pesticides from your hands, so wash it as well.
The best option for avoiding food pesticides is to start eating organic. Organic food is free from the dangerous pesticides and other toxins prevalent in other foods. Take milk, for example. It may look clean and pasteurized, but in the techno-agricultural world, milk-producing cows are fed a steady diet of antibiotics, hormones, anti-parasite drugs, and other medicines. They inevitably pass these chemicals into the milk that is then bottled and shipped out.
Additionally, intensive farming methods deplete food of many minerals and nutrients. Organic food is not only more nutritious, but tastier, juicier, and more flavorful. When you make the switch to organic, you will feel healthier and have more energy.
