Statins for Healthy People? Sheer (Criminal) Nonsense
Recent news reports have suggested that people with normal cholesterol should now be taking statins. It appears that Statins have an anti-inflammatory effect in addition to lowering cholesterol. The study showed that people with normal cholesterol yet with a high blood marker for inflammation called CRP (C Reactive Protein) could prolong survival by reducing heart attack or stroke if they took a statin. So, of course the recommendation is that people with normal cholesterols should take statins too! In truth, an elevated CRP occurs when the body is either missing an essential nutrient in sufficient amounts or is toxic with something, including an infection. These various things cause an inflammatory response that raises C Reactive protein. This is a body protective mechanism and lets us know that we must look to find what is really wrong, if we are more interested in restoring health as our motive. But to cover up an elevated CRP with a drug and not look for and find the underlying reason is bad-criminal in my viewpoint- medicine. But this is done all the time with high blood pressure medicine, arthritis medicine, diabetes medicine, and anti cancer medicines. Why not use some very safe and proven nutritional supplements that have no risk of causing cancer, muscle damage, premature senility that the statins may do? Consider these: Vitamin C lowers inflammatory markers. An article scheduled to appear in the January 1, 2009 issue of Free Radical Biology and Medicine reports the finding of researchers at the University of California , Berkeley that supplementing with vitamin C reduces C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. .. for participants with elevated C-reactive protein (defined as 1 milligram per liter or higher), vitamin C lowered CRP by 0.25 milligrams per liter compared to the placebo, a reduction similar to that associated with statin drug treatment. CRP is also susceptible to Omega # fish oils and proteolytic enzymes. These nutrients should always be given while looking for the underlying cause of the inflammation such as reducing levels of heavy metals, etc., etc. When is the last time your cardiologist or GP told suggested that you do that? Statin drugs are among the most profitable in medicine. Here are some facts about them that you should know: • The average drug cost is $1000 per year per patient. • This would be for the rest of their life. • Possible severe side effects include diarrhea, muscle pain, cancer, lowered vitamin and mineral status, and even death. • That 500 people must take the drug for one to get benefit from the drug in preventing death from heart attack • 8 out of 9 of the experts who recommended that people with normal cholesterols should take statins derived financial benefit from the pharmaceutical industry. • According to Business Week the pharmaceutical companies use manipulated statistics to make the drugs look 20xs better than they are and verifying that they cause amnesia, Alzheimers Disease and cancer. If you have a high CRP, make your doctor find out why. If he won’t or can’t, come to Lifeworks Wellness Center and we will, or go to www.acam.org and get a doctor near you who is aware of this. Find out why. Is it heavy metals? Nutritional deficiencies? Chemicals? Stress? Dental infections? Root canals? Then while you’re finding out add some vitamin C. I have a normal CRP and I take about 6 grams per day of vitamin C. It’s good for bones, immune health, reducing inflammation, connective tissue health and a million other things. Its cheap, its safe, and its required by everyone in much higher doses than recommended. Say no to drugs and yes to nutrition, it will save you a world of hurt.
