Are blood lead levels linked to adult crime and brain damage?

Two recent studies have shown that people exposed to lead in high levels in early childhood or in the womb grew up with reduced numbers of brain cells and were far more likely to be arrested for violent crimes.

“The effect is so strong that it may account for a large percentage of crimes in inner-city areas, where old houses are far more likely to have lead paint,” said Kim Dietrich of the University of Cincinnati in Ohio , who led one of the studies in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Medicine.

“There are some data that suggest that in fact lead does run in parallel with crime trends over the past several decades,” Dietrich said.

The researchers began following pregnant women living in lead contaminated housing in Cincinnati neighborhoods between 1979 and 1989 and followed 250 children. They then correlated blood lead levels with criminal arrest records.

They found that those with high lead levels had higher rates of arrest than those with lower lead levels. Specifically, 55 percent of the now-grown children had at least one arrest, 28 percent involving drugs and 27 percent serious motor vehicle violations.

Lead and other heavy metals are known to have other toxic effects. Do you know the lead blood level of yourself and your family members? What about mercury? Arsenic? Why not do a blood lead level and hair analysis and see whether you are toxic or not?

MISSING BRAIN CELLS

In the study cited above Dr. Kim Cecil of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center did magnetic resonance imaging of the brains of the volunteers. Those with high levels of lead at birth and early childhood had more than 1 percent of the total grey matter in their brains that was missing. Men were more affected than women.

“Our findings also suggest that this structural change is permanent,” they wrote.

Lead is found in paint, freeway dust, in imported toys, candy wrappers and a other places. For a good reference go to http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants/toxicagents/lead/lead.html

Metal-Free has a 10 year history of safety in people with high levels of heavy metals. It comes as a convenient oral spray in a once a day dosage.

All people including children should have blood levels checked annually (along with Vitamin D levels) and a hair analysis (http://www.doctorsdata.com/test_info.asp?id=2 ) for other heavy metals.

This includes older adults as it has been shown that lead can leach into the blood from bones as people age and lose bone mass.

Metal Free can bind with lead as well as mercury, arsenic, cadmium, uranium, aluminum, copper, and others and excrete them into the stool where they are eliminated. Any of these toxic elements can poison the body and cause malfunction.
